Carbon dioxide, also know as CO₂, It is made up of molecules that each have one carbon atom covalently double bonded to two oxygen atoms. It is found in the gas state at room temperature and at normally encountered concentrations it is colourless. We all know what is carbon dioxide, but, do you know?
1. Human activities have raised the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide content by 50% in less than 200 years. Human activities like burning wood(biomass), burning coal, gasoline and gas(fossil fuels) contributed to at least 87% of the CO2 gas released into the air. During the combustion process, the carbon present in fossil fuel combines with oxygen to produce water and carbon dioxide. That’s because the hydrocarbon fuels release water and Co2 when burning.

2.The greenhouse effect is the cause of global warming, as most of you know. This is because of those greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane, forms a layer in the atmosphere, trapping heat in. Without this effect, the global average temperature will remain around -13 degrees with a huge difference in temperature between day and night. How ever an excess amount of green house gases are causing us troubles.

3. Road transport accounts for about 72% of the carbon dioxide emissions related to the transport industry, with significant emitters being automobiles and light-duty trucks. Besides road vehicles, global aviation and marine shipping also contribute to carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere. Marine shipping contributes to 14% of carbon dioxide emissions from transport, while global aviation produces about 11%.

4. According to the scientists at the University of Washington, carbon dioxide emissions affect plant growth although it’s required for photosynthesis. These scientists suggest that too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will result in thick leaves. Those thick leaves are not very effective in reducing the atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, which can have catastrophic effects.
